Description

I went to Inner Mongolia on March 8, 2024, 400 kilometers away, to take this photo. From 19:39 to 21:30 (UTC+08:00) I used several sets of the same equipment to take the photo.

Lens: Sigma 105mm
Camera: ZWO ASI6200
Sky: 60s x 160/f2.0
Groud: 20s x 5/f2.0

The red-green light in the background is airglow. Unfortunately on the night of March 8, a significant part of the comet  tail was missing compared to what was observed at other times. Online comments were saying that it could be affected by the comet core spiral and solar wind. I processed the image of the comet core, and if you zoom in to look at 100% or 200%, you can see the faint traces of the core spiral. After all, the 105mm focal length is too short. I'm satisfied with it.

In processing these images, I noticed a long inverted L shaped track on the comet tail. I have looked up many photos of M31 on the internet and none of them have these distinct white or light blue gas. I think there should be traces left over from the comet tail. I am very happy that I was able to capture this complete comet tail.

The "meteor" in the lower left corner of the image was captured at 20:59:16 (UTC+08:00). Actually it is the wreckage of the Gbstr 26 Del rocket Body launched in 1999. It is amazing to capture a device which completed its own mission more than two decades ago. That's why I left it in the photo.
